First it was steriods, then HGH (Human Growth Hormone), now Spygate! At what point is there a line drawn where the government does not cross? Sure, in the U.S steriods are illegal, but is it really that serious that the government is locking up pro athletes for it (see Marion Jones)? But whatever, they crossed that line years ago and I’ve learned to live with it. However, now this whole Belichick (Spygate) thing has drawn the attention of Senator Alren Spector (member of the Senate Judiciary). Now this is just plain ridiculous! How in God’s name should taping the practices of other NFL teams be the priority of a United States Senator?! This to me makes absolutely no sense! With all the crap going on in country you’re concerned with cheating in sports… Give me a break! Obviously this comes down to money. The NFL is a billion dollar conglomerate and therefore the Senate feels that it needs to keep a strong hold on what’s going on within the ‘company’. I guess if you were really going to look at this in a business sense (and through a little conspiracy in it), the Patriots are to NFL as Microsoft is to the Tech industry. Maybe the Senate is trying to find a way to slow their near monopolization of the Lombardi trophy over the last decade. Guess I never knew the NFL had an anti-trust agreement.
The funniest thing about all of this are the people that believe the NFL should get involved; Their thought process being that the NFL is a business and that Spygate is corruption, etc… Nine times out of ten these are the same people that are bitching because they can’t understand why players hold out. For some reason these people are only willing to see the business side of things when they want to.
My take, sports is a business… the business of entertainment. Let it be what it is! People want to see Bonds smash balls outta the park, people want to see Marion Jones set records, and people want to see Brady lead the Pats to more rings. In order for them to this maybe they need to juice up or cheat, but who cares! I’d rather see a team thats really good because they cheated and have a team filled with ‘roids’, then watch a reenactment of sports in the 1950’s! No one is going to pay to see player’s hit infielders or shoot lay-ins (unless your ’90’s Jazz fan or Princeton Alum) so just leave sports alone!
